Let the Mardi Gras Festivities Begin! Make Plans to Attend This Holiday-Inspired Workshop

Ever wonder how the beautiful, ornate, and detailed Mardi Gras Indian costumes are conceived and created? Hosted at Second Vine Wine in the Marigny, NOMGI Sip & Sew offers a taste of one of New Orleans' most beloved cultural components: Mardi Gras Indians. Learn how to hand bead and sequin designs on canvas during this hands-on workshop on Sunday, January 19th.

At NOMGI, masking Indians teach attendees how to hand bead/sequin designs on canvas. The designs are tailored to strive for the completion of each piece within the class so each person can leave with a design to cherish for a lifetime.

This interactive cultural experience includes one needle, one 3x3 canvas, an assortment of beads and stencil designs, a custom case for your finished product and snacks. In addition to creating personalized keepsakes, participants are taught a brief history of Mardi Gras Indian culture as well as chants. Midway through the session, guests are invited to watch a live Mardi Gras Indian performance by members of the Young Maasai Hunters tribe. Mardi Gras Indian costumes will be on display for the viewing.

A variety of wines, as well as a full bar, will be available for purchase at the venue. Special requests for wine can be placed ahead of time. With a combination of history, performance, crafts, and wine, Sip & Sew is sure to leave a lasting imprint.

Sip & Sew classes are offered Sundays starting at 1 p.m. Special dates and times may be available upon request. Advanced booking is highly suggested, walk-ins may be accommodated upon availability. Groups of no more than 35 people are welcome and special booking can be scheduled for larger parties. Private events bookings are also available.

Admission is $45.00 per person. The price of the class includes all sewing materials, light snacks, a live performance by the Young Maasai Hunters Indians, and photo opportunities. Please note the Indians will not be in costume; however, pieces of their suits will be on display throughout the venue.
